Since version 6.4 of the ATEM software, Blackmagic has required 64 bit widows for the installer. The SDK and API still support 32 bit and the software panel software itself is still 32 bit. It is just the installer that insists on 64 bit Windows.

He is a simple trick if you just want to get the software panel to work on 32 bit Windows or use 3rd party software such as JustMacros or my PowerShell/Xkeys/Arduino solutions.

I have tested this with v6.4, 6.6 and 6.8 without any problems.

Note: this is not suitable for managing updates to your switcher firmware. You should ensure that your switcher is running the same firmware as the copy of the software panel you copied from the 64Bit machine. Do not run the ATM configuration utility from a 32 bit machine.

The installation steps:

  • Install ATEM software on a 64bit Windows computer.
  • Copy the content from “C:\Program Files (x86)\Blackmagic Design\Blackmagic ATEM Switchers” to your 32 bit machine “C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\Blackmagic ATEM Switchers”.
  • Install C++ Redistributable for 32bit OS (x86) from:
  • Run a CMD prompt as Administrator and execute the following command:
    regsvr32.exe “C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\Blackmagic ATEM Switchers\ BMDSwitcherAPI.dll”

You can also use this procedure to get the control panel software working on a 64bit Windows machine that already has Desktop Video installed. Just substitute the regsvr32.exe command for:
C:\Windows\SYSWOW64\regsvr32.exe “C:\Program Files (x86)\Blackmagic Design\Blackmagic ATEM Switchers\ BMDSwitcherAPI.dll”

  1. You are a hero! Many thanks. For others: please note that you probably need to install the correct VS C++ Redistributable BEFORE you run the regsvr32 command (swap the last two steps).

  2. Could you find a way to do this on version 7.1? This worked before, but now having problems installing the latest software

    1. I have been able to do this with 7.1 without any problem. Depending on how you copy the files over to the 32bit machine, they may be blocked. Using USB stick with fat32 is usually fine.

  3. Hallo

    1. Hi, I just tested on Windows 7 32 bit with ATEM 7.1.1 client installed using the copy method and it worked to drag and drop an image. What firmware are you using? There was an update to the early TVS HD units due to an issue with the persistent media pol image store.
